We hope all your dreams come true in 2020✨✨ Many Japanese people visit a shrine during the New year season. This is called “Hatsumoude”.
We wish New Year’s health, happiness, and so on at Hatsumoude.
One of the historic shrine in Joetsu is Kota Shrine!
The gods of worship at Kota Shrine is Okuninushinomikoto and a god called Nunakawa Princess.
Okuninushi is famous as a god of marriage worship, but in Japanese mythology he is in love with various goddesses.
One of the goddesses is Nunakawa Princess,
Okuninushi heard that there is a beautiful woman in the northeastern country,
he came to this place from Izumo (now Shimane Prefecture), far away from Niigata, to meet this princess.
Nunakawa Princess does not readily came out but Okuninushi wanted to see her face at a glance.
So he wrote a Waka(Japanese poetry) for her.
Then, Nunakawa Princess also wtote a poem for him ...
Finally, Nunakawa princess appeared in front of Okuninushi. They deeply have loved each other since then.
Thanks to this romantic mythology, this shrine is popular with young women and couples as those two gods are worshipped as the god of marriage.
